Enforcing the Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Project:

To address the growing cost to society associated with underage drinking, Congress appropriated
funds to the Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to
fund the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Program.  The program provides funding,
training, and technical assistance to states in an effort to help develop comprehensive and
coordinated initiatives to enforce underage drinking laws that:

  • prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors and to prevent the purchase
  • prohibit consumption of alcoholic beverages by individuals under the age of 21

The Nevada EUDL Project, Stand Tall, Don’t Fall: United Against Underage Drinking is engaged in
the following:

  • awards funds to local law enforcement agencies for enforcement operations
  • offers P.O.S.T. certified training seminars to peace officers in EUDL strategies
  • provides technical assistance to local communities in the review and development of local
ordinances and practices to deter underage drinking
  • supports innovative and promising practices to prevent underage drinking such as school
policies, diversion programs, and youth prevention team activities

The Nevada EUDL program is funded through the State Department of Health and Human Services’
Division of Child and Family Services, Juvenile Programs Office.

“Underage drinking can not be successfully addressed by focusing on youth alone. Youth drink within the context of a society in
which alcohol use is normative behavior and images of alcohol are pervasive.  They usually obtain alcohol- either directly or
indirectly- from adults. Efforts to reduce underage drinking, therefore, need to focus on adults and must engage the society at
large.”
